In an alternative universe set at the turn of the twentieth century, some people are witches, each of them holding a different kind of power. While they can use their power on their own, it has limited strength. In order to pump it up to its full potential, a witch has to sexually join with an animal familiar. While people view witches as people with full agency, familiars are regarded as little more than animals that need to be controlled by a witch. Once formed, the bond keeps the familiar loyal to their witch, but it can be broken by another witch coupling with the familiar, something that witches jealously guard against happening to their own.
New private detective Seamus “James” Byrne, a witch seeker, finds the perfect familiar in Aden, a snow leopard, after leaving the Boston police department in disgrace. Once they bond through sex, Aden's power enhances James' natural ability to locate people and things - the perfect way to launch his fledgling business. As they work to build-up the agency, James and Aden have to learn to navigate their growing affection and need for each other.
